Somatic Healing for High-Functioning Women: Why You Still Feel Stuck In Success

Somatic Healing Retreat Northern Colorado

You’re doing everything right.

You’re taking care of your body.
You’re showing up in your life.
You’re leading, holding, helping, healing.

You have a life you love. A beautiful life.

Yet holding life well doesn’t mean it doesn’t sometimes feel heavy or overwhelming.

Being successful, no matter how shiny, never opts you out from the human experience and struggle.

High-functioning and highly successful women are often praised for how well they hold everything together, but that strength usually comes from living in the mind: thinking, analyzing, pushing through.

Over time, that sometimes creates a quiet disconnection from the body and self, where stress and hard emotions aren’t being processed, but managed and repressed.

Somatic healing helps you come back into full connection to yourself. It builds capacity and nervous sytem regulation. It changes the way you show up in relationships and roles.

High functioning women often feel things like chronic tension, low-level anxiety, or that “functional freeze” where life looks fine on the outside but feels heavy, numb, or overwhelming underneath. This is also why many highly successful women don’t feel any better even with all the mindset work and personal growth.

These highly ambitious and successful women often become exceptionally good at behaving and producing well, while actually never living in their experiences and full self. They find themselves stuck in an auto pilot nervous system response where things can look so good, but where she can’t even feel the goodness or enjoy it.

Like a duck things look smooth on the surface, but underneath there is a lot of mess going on. You feel always busy, moving too fast, too much and have lost your sense of presence. You get stuck in a functional fight or flight mode where you are going 90 miles an hour and it feels too fast but like you can’t slow down, you can’t relax and you have a death grip of control and high anxiety over keeping it all together.

You feel like you are micro-managing yourself. Hyper vigilant or braced, but because it looks so good- others miss it. You bypass it. Your felt experience of life and therefor your needs and desires become inconvenient and unaccessible to you.

Somatic healing shifts the work out of your head and back into your body—where these patterns actually live.

Instead of only talking and over thinking about what’s hard, you begin to feel and process it in real time through sensation, breath, and nervous system regulation. This is what allows the body to release stored stress, come out of survival states, and return to a more grounded baseline. Over time, you’re not just coping better- you are actually responding differently, feeling more like yourself, and finally experiencing the kind of calm, clarity, and capacity you’ve been trying to think your way into.

This is where women feel more present to their lives. Somatic healing and practices help you feel connected and enjoy the pace of life- able to move hard and fast, but also to slow down and experience moments of relaxation, play, and fun. They get to feel like themselves- only even better. And even when they don’t feel good- it helps them to stay centered and in their values and most importantly- to not gaslight themselves out of their reality and experience and stay present with all of themselves and their lives and their people.

Knowing better and understanding your patters doesn’t always mean you feel better or are able to show up differently.

Why Somatic Work is So Supportive to High Functioners

High functioners are rarely stuck from lack of trying or effort.

You’ve done the therapy, read the books, and are bored of the podcasts. You could talk circles around why you do what you do and probably even around your therapist. You probably get sick at some point of being validated about the good and the hard and you just want to do something that changes it. You want to understand why something that happened so long ago still seems to be pulling and influencing you now. You want to know why you can’t seem to not feel like a scared little girl around your family when your a badass at work. Why you freeze or explode in conflict or at your kids when nothing severe happened.

You want radical responsibility. You don’t just want to ruminate, over think, and keep trying to grit your way through it all because you already know how to do that. You are likely a deep thinker, someone who hates black and white thinking and wants to explore the nuance and the third perspectives. You want to be consistently growing and healing- getting better and better. You want to play with your edges and capacity and push yourself past discomfort.

High functioners don’t need help pushing through or doing things the hard way. But you do wonder if you ever get to feel better. If you could slow down to be more present and connected without having to either burn out or lose your ambition.

You want to keep your drive but not have your drive feel like you are stuck on overdrive all of the time. You like to go hard and fast, but wish you could slow down sometimes too. You want your pace and your life to feel more balanced. That kind of balance and capacity is found through having your whole self online.

Mindset work and a lot of traditional therapies often fall short for high functioners at some point because the problem is no longer with your thinking. It’s in your soma- your body.

You aren’t just stuck mentally, you are stuck in the somatic patterns of your nervous system. Your body. Your soma. Your unconscious and automatic animal body. Sometimes the system your business or home or motherhood needs is an internal one.

You can’t always think and solve your way out of emotional and felt patterns- you have to feel and move them out. You have to interupt them and build new muscles, develop different responses, and increase the flexibility of your feeling systems.

You’re stuck because you’ve been trying to change your life from one part of you. You mastered your mind in logic while your nervous system and body is still running your life on old patterns, postures, and rules of relationship. The margins in your life matter and you are starting to feel that.

What somatic healing actually is

Somatic healing is a body-centered therapeutic approach that focuses on the mind-body connection to release chronic tension, stress, and trauma stored within the physical body. Unlike traditional talk therapy, it uses physical awareness, breathing, and movement to process emotional pain, calm the nervous system, and restore well-being.

Somatic therapies teach us how to come back to our holistic humanity. To be able to feel, process, and move ourselves through life more connected, grounded, and centered.

In somatic therapies we work with your nervous system, unconscious, and the parts of you that don’t respond to logic alone.

You can understand your patterns.
You can have mental awareness.
You can know exactly why you do what you do…

…and still feel stuck in it. Unable to move any differently. Stuck in over or under responses. Stuck in dissociation. Or stuck in over drive.

That’s when the pattern isn’t just a thought or mindset problem. You can know better and still not do any better.

Think of weight loss as an example, how often do people go searching for exactly what to eat or not eat. Yet the “knowing” is often not the space where they are stuck. It’s the patterns and relationship to food, body, movement. It’s the emotional eating or food noise. It’s not about knowing in your head, you have to also know the body. The unconscious that drives us.

Somatic work is inherently relational work.

When we find resistance and stuckness, the goal is not to “make it go away”. We don’t want to quickly cover it up. We want it to heal, not just not be seen or heard.

The goal is to learn it.

Feel it.

Find it’s wisdom and it’s medicine.

To find the edges of it’s reach and strenth and what it’s job is.

It’s from that place, that it can evolve. Move. Dissolve. Alchemize into something new.

In my work with women, I trust your patterns. I trust your trauma responses. Your disregulation. Anger. Grief. Resentment. All of it, has a place and a medicine. Some of it needs boundaries, some needs care. Some needs softness and other parts need firm pressure or a change in environment or behavior.

But we won’t know any of that wisdom if we just try to get rid of it.

In somatic work, we can stop playing whack-a-mole with your “symptoms” and insecurities and mess that you go round and round with. Somatic healing works directly and indirectly with resource to address the root patterns driving it all. Somatics brings relationship and ownership to all the parts of you into the process. It names what has not been named.

And by bringing those things into your awareness and relationship- you gain influence and impact on them.

Not by forcing a change or even by changing the surface behaviors…
but by creating the conditions where your system can actually shift at the root cause of it. Where it doesn’t take force. It becomes your new nature. It changes your posture and identity, not just how you act. It alchemizes.

Somatic Therapy Works with Your Whole Self

You aren’t just a floating mind.

Trauma and stress is not just a story, it is something you feel. It shapes how you experience yourself and others. How you love, how you parent, how you respond to emotions or conflict or even opportunity, joy, and connection.

Your mental health is not just in your head, it’s in your body.

You are made up of multiple interconnected parts of your self (PEMSER):

  • Physical — your body, tension, energy, sensations, biology
  • Emotional — your feelings (both expressed and suppressed)
  • Mental — your thoughts, beliefs, patterns, conscious patterns and biases
  • Somatic — your nervous system, felt experience of life, your unconscious patterns
  • Energetic — your capacity, presence, and internal state
  • Relational — how you show up with others, the connection to self and what is not self

Not having relationship, access, and influence over all these parts of you is often what keeps you stuck in your patterns both seen and unseen. This is why somatic healing is especially effective for high functioners, it helps you with the parts of you that you tend to deny, hide, change, or repress. It’s often where you are leaking energy, bypassing boundaries, and losing your capacity.

Somatic healing changes everything

Somatic work doesn’t just help you “feel better.”

It helps you become more dynamically alive. It helps you to be able to feel massive amounts of activation, stress, conflict, and know how to hold and move through it.

So instead of:

  • overusing the same patterns
  • reacting on autopilot
  • managing everything internally
  • having the same conflicts and results

You begin to:

  • slow down without shutting down
  • feel without becoming overwhelmed
  • respond instead of react
  • able to move energy internally and influence others
  • become more present in relationships
  • shift the way you show up to conflict, stress, and high emotion experiences

You don’t lose your drive or ability to produce or be ambitious. You can still go fast and hard when you heal and regulate your nervous system. Animals move at all kinds of speeds and intensities in health and you are no different. What matters is that the pace, the presence, the intensity is chosen and embodied. It’s something you are deciding and not your past trauma patters or an overactive response to others or even the cultures traumas.

You widen your range. You become more adaptable. You build capacity, not just externally, but internally.

You feel more whole and balanced- even when there is still outside pressures and hard things to hold.

Why you can’t think your way out of this

You already know how to change your thoughts. In fact you are probably wildly efficient at bullshitting not just others but yourself. You can lean into a toxicly positive mindset that can silver line the darkest of clouds and turn any resistance, discomfort, and red light into a “growth edge” that you blow right past. It’s no wonder high functioners are bad at boundaries. We see boundaries as something to overcome and not something to sometimes listen and learn from. We bypass and gaslight ourselves from feeling anything that isn’t good or grateful and that is actually what ends up leaking our energy, capacity, and influence.

You can:

  • know you need better boundaries… and still not hold them or even know what they need to be
  • understand you have needs and desires … and still override them or not even be able to feel them yet alone communicate or meet them
  • recognize your patterns… and still repeat them
  • bypass your humanity feeling empty, messy, and lonely while everyone only sees your successes

Until your body, emotions, and nervous system are included…

nothing can fully shift.

You can build a pretty shiny life that feels empty or hard to live in.

Learning how to be in your body- coming back to a grounded and present state.

While somatics is a wide umbrella term that covers many “bottom-up” theraputic approaches and practices- there are some ways you can start healing and regulating your nervous system.

Let’s start with the foundation: being able to connect to your aliveness. To feel yourself through sensation and not just thoughts and ideas.

Somatic work all starts with noticing the body. Being in your body is often not a normal or natural thing for many of us. Being present isn’t always pleasant which is why many of us adapt by moving too quickly to feel or stay in a dissociated state by being in our head all the time. Or why we get suddenly overwhelmed by a flood of emotion.

Overthinking is under-feeling.

When you are caught in a mental or emotional spiral, learning how to be with sensation can be the first and sometimes only intervention. Let’s start using somatic therapies right here and now. By starting to learn how to feel your feelings.

The next time you notice an activation, an emotion, conflict- you can focus your attention and energy on what it feels like in your body as sensation.

What is the sensation that it holds? What is it like?

somatic healing, somatic sensations and what they feel like in the body

Where is it that you feel that sensation?

Where do you not feel it?

Does that energy want to move?

How and where does that energy move?

With somatic healing, we often use metaphor and nature to help us experience ourselves and life and not just “understand” it in our minds.

Mental health lives in your entire body and being.

Anxiety, isn’t just in your thoughts. It’s in your heart rate. The way words get stuck in your throat. The way it feels like trying to run, but you are in mud. Too much and too fast, and yet trapped in a grog. Your palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy. You’re nervous but on the surface you look calm and ready.

It’s no wonder the best artists and writers don’t just tell us thoughts. They tell us how it feels. How it moves.

That’s not just in your head- it’s happening in your soma, your body. Your lived experience. Your chest. Your throat. Your gut. Your spirit. Your relationships. This is how you actually feel a feeling.

When you can be with sensation, it often gives us more capacity to be able to be with it without feeling overwhelmed by it, dissociating, needing to distract ourselves, or allowing that feeling/emotion to drive a behavior that doesn’t ultimately align to our values.

When we start to be with the energy and sensation of ourselves- feelings feel less scary, bad, and harmful not only to ourselves- but to others. We start to create a new relationship to ourselves and our internal reactions that can often drive our behaviors.

Somatic healing is a great support for women who

  • Look like they have it all together- but feel the weight of holding it all together
  • Are highly self-aware but still stuck in the same emotional or relational patterns
  • Have done the mindset work, therapy, or journaling… and still don’t feel different
  • Live in constant low-level or high level stress (tight, anxious, on edge, or in a freeze/fawn/fight/flight)
  • Struggle with irritability, shutdown, or overwhelm—especially at the end of the day
  • Are balancing motherhood, ambition, and relationships—and feel their capacity thinning
  • Notice they’re reacting in ways that don’t match who they want to be
  • Feel disconnected from themselves, their body, or their emotions
  • Are in a season of growth, transition, or identity shifts—and feel stuck in the in-between
  • Are ready to stop just managing and start actually feeling calm, grounded, and like themselves again
  • Women craving to not just be heard and validated- but who need more capacity to keep showing up

Somatic healing in Northern Colorado

If you’ve been looking for a different kind of support, something that doesn’t just validate- but actually helps you change. Something that brings all the parts of you back together into a relationship to self – to who and where you currently are with presence, while also giving you capacity to keep growing, healing, and changing your capacity for life-

this is the work I do.

Not surface-level. Not just intellectualizing and story telling- but learning to write your own story.

Not just in your head- felt in your whole body and being.

Not just talking about it. But relationally working with your full system so things can shift at the root.

Somatic Healing Books:

While A Body Keeps The Score, by Bessel van der Kolk, is certainly the most widely referred to and known book on somatic healing, it’s one I rarely recommend. While the book is full of very important language and tools for somatic healing- the book itself is hard for those with trauma and truly is a better resource for practitioners and therapists. This book specifically speaks to somatic healing and body based interventions and support for those with trauma, PTSD, and CPTSD (complex post traumatic disorder).

Here are some books I would recommend that are about somatic healing, somatic therapy, and body-based healing:

Somatic Therapists and Healing Practitioners:

Psychology Today is often the best place to look up somatic therapists or psychotherapists near you. You can search for local, for somatic, as well as be able to see their specialties and see if they offer insurance etc. Finding a therapist, especially for the first time or maybe after a hard experience can be vulnerable. Many practitioners offer a free intake call to see if them and their approach resonate. The heaviest weight at the gym is often the front door.
